Caladiums are known for their colorful and beautiful leaves, but there is a time when the plant may naturally stop producing new foliage. The leaves can slowly turn yellow, wilt, and eventually disappear. Although this can look worrying, it is often a normal part of the Caladium life cycle called dormancy.

During dormancy, the Caladium is not necessarily dead. The plant is simply resting, while its energy remains stored in the bulb or tuber underground. This resting period allows the plant to prepare for new growth when suitable conditions return.

One of the first signs of dormancy is a gradual change in the leaves. They may lose their color, become yellow, and eventually dry out. Instead of trying to keep these leaves green, allow the plant to naturally finish this stage.

Watering should also be reduced when the plant begins to enter dormancy. Since there is little or no foliage actively growing, the plant does not need as much water as it does during its active growing period. Keeping the soil excessively wet during this time can create unnecessary problems for the bulb.

Once the foliage has completely died back, keep the Caladium bulb in a suitable environment and avoid disturbing it unnecessarily. The most important thing is to prevent excessive moisture and protect the bulb from unsuitable conditions.

When warm conditions return and the bulb is ready to grow again, you may notice a small shoot emerging from the soil. This is an exciting sign that your Caladium is coming back to life. At this stage, watering can gradually be increased as new growth develops.

Dormancy can be different depending on the variety, growing conditions, temperature, and environment. Some Caladiums may enter dormancy sooner than others, so there is no need to worry if your plants do not follow exactly the same schedule.

Understanding dormancy makes Caladium growing much easier. When the leaves disappear, it does not always mean that you have lost the plant. With proper care during its resting period, the bulb can remain healthy and eventually produce new colorful foliage again.
